Port of NY Booming, but Data Hints at CA Comeback

For the first time in history, in 2022, the Port of New York and New Jersey broke the nine-million container mark, moving nearly 9.5 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), as more trade has moved away from the West Coast.

While the Port of New York and New Jersey came in second overall, with the top spot being the Port of Los Angeles, in recent months the Port of New York took the top spot away from California as the nation’s busiest port.

For the first time in four months, however, New York processed fewer containers than the Port of Los Angeles, demonstrating that a California comeback may soon be in the cards.
