Armed Robberies in Singapore Strait Rise During H1 2022

ReCAAP ISC, a Singapore-based public service agency helping the maritime community combat piracy at sea, released their half-year report showing an increase in armed robberies on vessels in the Singapore Straight (the 113 km-long, 19 km-wide strait between the Strait of Malacca in the west and the South China Sea in the east.) The 42 incidents, however, were not qualify as “piracy” because they occurred in internal waters, archipelagic waters and territorial seas rather than on the open sea.

During the same period last year, there were 38 incidents, representing a 2022 increase of 11 percent.
